Importance of Early Treatment for PCOS

A hormonal disorder caused due to an imbalance of hormones, PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is commonly seen in women of reproductive age today. PCOS is characterised by the appearance of small cysts or growths in the ovary which might hamper with female fertility. Treatment of PCOS is often delayed due to failure in recognising its early symptoms.

Symptoms of PCOS

The symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome from vary from one woman to another and hence it is not easy to ascertain the presence of the disease. However, the following symptoms are often associated with the condition.
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Inability to successfully conceive a baby
  • Excess facial hair and unwanted hair growth on body
  • Missing periods
  • Hair fall and hair thinning on scalp similar to hair loss pattern in men
  • Weight fluctuation involving weight gain
  • Increased skin problems like acne, darkening of skin and skin tags

Causes of PCOS

The actual causes for developing ovarian cysts and other disorders associated with PCOS are yet to be ascertained. However, hormonal imbalances and increased production of androgen, which is a male hormone, is said to be behind most of the after effects of the condition. Studies have shown a genetic link of the disorder, so the probability to have the disease due to hereditary is very high.

The complications related to PCOS are not limited just to its symptoms or infertility. Prolonged PCOS, that has remained untreated for long, are known to contribute to elevated insulin levels or insulin resistance leading to diabetes. Studies have also shown their contributions in the incidence of conditions like sleep apnoea, uterine cancers and heart conditions. Untreated PCOS can have life threatening consequences.

Treatment for PCOS

The treatment for PCOS is initiated only after conducting diagnosis tests to ascertain the disease. The various treatment procedures for the disease include birth control pills which help in regularising periods, ovulation inducing medication to treat infertility issues, androgen blocking medications to numb the actions of male hormone and other medicines to treat the symptoms.

Has it been too long since you've been trying to conceive and nothing seems to work ? Maybe its time you visited a doctor for a thorough physical consult.

http://kasturihospitals.com/gynaecology/infertility-iui.html

Who should go ?
In order to conceive a couple must have unprotected sex regularly, especially during the times with higher chances of getting impregnated. While it might just take even as long as a year, in some cases couples are unable to conceive even with repeated tries. Such people must get their fertility checked. It is not necessary that only a woman is infertile, men too need to be tested for fertility, it is almost a 50 percent chance for each of the individuals to be infertile.

What causes infertility ?

Age, smoking , obesity , diabetes, excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs, STD's , chemical exposure, over eating or being vegan and an unhealthy lifestyle could all be reasons as to why it is hard for you to become pregnant. While these are just external factors there are many other reasons internally for both men and women like :

For men ,
  • Low sperm count

  • Low sperm mobility ( inability to swim )
  • Abnormal sperm
  • Testicle cancer
  • Mumps

  • PCOS
  • Poor egg quality

Treatment for Ovulation Disorders

Women approaching hospitals for a treatment that would cater to the need of being able to conceive a child is increasing. The problems associated with such cases may be different, ranging from improper copulation to improper working of any of the organs that play some role in pregnancy.

What is ovulation induction?
In some women, the problem might be associated with the formation of eggs. Ovulation induction is a solution to this. This procedure promotes the ovaries to produce eggs so that there are better chances of fertilisation happening after a sexual intercourse. This treatment is generally suggested to women who have low rates of hormones for ovulation or for those completely lacking ovulation.
Generally, ovulation induction consists of Clomiphene Citrate, which is an oral drug. This promotes the growth of follicles which would ultimately lead to the formation of eggs. This proves to be effective in most of the women with the issues of not ovulating at all or low production of hormones during ovulation. If this treatment is a failure, then the use of gonadotropins is suggested. These are taken by injections under the skin. This is capable of replacing FSH and would be a solution to the issue of ineffectiveness or lack of FSH.
The progress of the treatment is monitored throughout to see if the cycles of ovulation, produce the required effects. For this reason, the ovulation cycles during the treatment are known as monitored cycles.

KasthuriMulti Speciality- Obstetrics & Gynaecology is a hospital that has proved its capability in dealing with the different issues involved in obstetrics. The clinic deals with medications ranging from the use of clomid to FSH to deal with the issues involved in ovulation.
