Types of Menstrual Disorders

  • Painful Cramps (Dysmenorrhea)
Periods can sometimes give very painful cramps called Dysmenorrhea. Cramps occur when your uterus contracts as periods begin, which is normal during periods. Some medical issues like fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis can be the reason for this extremely painful menstruation.
  • Heavy Bleeding (Menorrhagia)
Another common menstrual problem is a heavy period, which is also called Menorrhagia. Heavy periods cause you to bleed more than normal, like longer than the average of five to seven days.
  • Absence of Menstruation (Amenorrhea)
In some cases, women may not get their periods and that condition is called Amenorrhea. When you don't get your first period by age 16, then it is said to be primary amenorrhea, which may be caused by an issue with the pituitary gland, or defect with female reproductive system, or a delayed puberty. And when you stop getting your regular periods for six months or more, then it is secondary amenorrhea.
  • Light or infrequent menstruation (oligomenorrhea)
It refers to the menstrual period which occurs more than 35 days or more. It is generally not a cause for the concern, except if the periods occur more than 3 months apart.
